I'd like to say it was a typical night out as an expat in South Africa ... but it wasn't. It was actually pretty singular, pretty special and pretty spectacular.

Hobnobbing for a good cause with the American Consul General at his home in Joburg. Last night was the annual fundraising reception for the American Society of South Africa and it was held at the Consul General's Residence along embassy row in Houghton, the same suburb of Johannesburg where The Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory is located and where Nelson Mandela lived when he was President of South Africa.
Members of the Marine Security Guard Detachment were there. In their "business casual" attire. Son-of-and-father-of-and-uncle-of-and-brother-of-a-Marine Vince snagged an invitation from them to attend the Marine Corps Ball in Joburg in November. We're taking a whole table. Carpe diem!
This year's event beneficiary was the Sunlight Safehouse, a home for abused and neglected children in Joburg. A worthy cause, a beautiful setting, and a wonderful evening,
... now back to my normal expat life.
