On the road again and off the grid

We have friends in from the US and we are all off for another EPIC ROAD TRIP. This time starting from the bottom of Africa going straight north up the coast into the red dunes of Namibia and across the Kalahari in Botswana to Joburg.

See you in a few weeks!

Happy National Dog Day America!

It is National Dog Day in the US. Every day is National Dog Day for Lou & Serge in South Africa. Here are a couple of pictures of them enjoying their favorite activities.

Serge loves to stick his head out the window of the car and let the wind blow through his gorgeous auburn locks. Either that or he feels he owes it to the world to put his fabulousness on display for everyone to see. He's a hunk.

Lou likes to sleep. He is one lazy dog! He could and usually does lay around all day. In our bed.
He has a very hard time understanding why Serge is so anxious to jump up and go for a walk or a run all the time and why Serge loves to leap on and off the couch and bed. All that energy! It's not that Lou can't do it. He can, but it is so much easier to have someone pick him up and carry him to the door when its time to go for a walk. Which I do. Regularly.

When is National Dog Day in SA? Every day!
Lou being cute ...

Jesse in The Living Room

The Living Room in Maboneng is a fresh rooftop venue offering Urban-Eco Café Cuisine, Plant Art and Urban Design; a showroom for green design and lifestyle.

Designed, built & growing by the hands of the Tiakaya Designs team, the truly organic space is constantly evolving as season’s change, plants grow, and new creations come to life. The space boasts prototypes of vertical gardening solutions, and there is a shop which sells potted plants, gifts & jewellery.

The Living Room is like an oasis in the sky, a veritable Hanging Gardens of Babylon. And a super cool place to watch the sun set over the cityscape.

The cafe has  a nice tapas menu
Plant shop!

And there's a full bar for sundowners.

Down it goes.

Ah, nothing like a blue sunset ...

We were there to see and hear Jesse Clegg, the son of Johnny Clegg  and as you would expect, a very talented musician, songwriter and performer.

Acoustic and (almost) unplugged - there was some amplification. He was awesome!

I love Japanese lanterns.

Nice backdrop too of the Telecom tower and Ponte City with its Vodacom billboard. Another fun night in the CBD.

with Graham Parker after he performed Live @ Drew's

The intimacy of the setting and the incredible view reminded me of an actual real living room where I heard and saw musicians perform in NJ. About 10 times a year, Drew Eckman, a former associate editor at Newsweek magazine, invites musician friends - who are usually in town anyway to perform live in New York - to come over to his house in Ringwood, NJ and perform in his actual living room, a venue he calls Live @ Drew's.

picture windows overlook the lake

Drew has a log cabin on a lake in the country with a large central living room overlooked by a second floor balcony. He removes the furniture and sets up rows of folding chairs for about 60 to 65 guests to come and hear live music. Guests bring a snack and something to drink and leave a little something for Drew to pay the artist and also the cleaning lady the next day.

In both cases, the more intimate setting makes it feel less like a concert with an audience and more like a musician performing with a small circle of friends. Nice.

The Living Room is located on the top floor at 20 Kruger St, right in the heart of Maboneng.

Art? Absolut-ely!

Spring is definitely (probably) here and Joburg is blooming with both flowers and art. We are in the middle of Art Week Joburg when for one week galleries, museums, arts organizations and artists collaborate to create a strong public focus on the vibrant art scene. Started in Cape Town in 2012, this is the first year for Art Week in Joburg. Participating art exhibit spaces can be visited in Maboneng, Braamfontein-Newtown, Alexandra, Soweto, and the Rosebank Arts Strip.

Similar to New York's TOAST, the “Tribeca Open Artist Studio Tour", the Art Walkabout had art ...

... and parties.

Arts on Main
On Friday evening, we did the Joburg Art Walkabout along Fox, Kruger and Commissioner Streets in Maboneng visiting open exhibitions along the way in independent galleries as well as ones inside Arts on Main and MOAD.

The exhibition spaces were all open until 8:00 on Friday night and I imagine beyond judging from the parties going on inside some ...

Art Week Joburg is timed to end with the weekend-long FNB Joburg Art Fair being held at the Sandton Convention Center. FNB Joburg Art Fair is the leading African art fair and first of its kind on the African continent. It was established in 2008 by Artlogic and in addition to art exhibits and art platforms, there are three days worth of talks and workshops on everything "From Jung and Marcel Duchamp to the Illuminati and the Underground."

We helped kick off the FNB Joburg Art Fair, at the Absolut Art Party at MOAD. (It was the neighborly thing to do!)

On Saturday we took in more art exhibits, this time in the Braamfontein and Newtown precincts  ...

... including the Market Photo Workshop.

... and the Artist Proof Studio.

There's a new monolith in town

I went to my hair salon this morning, Bijan in Mandela Square, and as I was sitting in traffic on 5th Avenue, I had (plenty of) time to notice a new piece of public art on the corner in front of the Da Vinci. The Candle of Hope monolith and its backdrop glass mural.

My first thought was that it reminded me of a Cleopatra's Needle, the popular name for each of three ancient Egyptian obelisks re-erected in LondonParis, and New York City during the nineteenth century. The obelisks in London and New York are a pair, the one in Paris, also part of a pair came from a different site in Luxor where its twin remains. Although all three Needles are genuine Ancient Egyptian obelisks, their shared nickname is a misnomer, as they have no connection with Queen Cleopatra VII of Egypt, and were already over a thousand years old in her lifetime. Fun fact.

Met Trustees Dining Room overlooking the Gates exhibit & NY Needle
The New York Needle is on an elevated knoll in Central Park behind the Metropolitan Museum of Art and you get a great view of it from the Museum's Trustees Dining Room. The Met has an extensive Egyptian Collection including the majestic Temple of Dendur so it is only fitting that the Needle be so closely situated. Oddly enough though, you cannot see the Needle from the glass enclosure which houses the Temple. Another fun fact.

Instead of a straight pyramid shape on top, the Candle of Hope has a pyramid-shaped flame. And like the ancient language of hieroglyphics on Cleopatra's Needle, the Candle of Hope has its own modern language of hieroglyphics. While the Needle pays homage to a Pharaoh, the 18th Dynasty Thutmose III, similarly the Candle is a monument to a 20th century President, Nelson Mandela. Pictures of Mandela being released from prison, signing the constitution, doing his Madiba jive, and images of SA's historic rugby World Cup win tell the story of Mandela's Presidency just like the hieroglyphics proclaim the majesty of Thut's reign.

Seeing the Candle of Hope actually made me feel better about being stuck in traffic.

African Parks March for Wildlife

African Parks head office staff will don their walking shoes to join marchers in the Global March for Elephants and Rhinos in Johannesburg on 4 October, one of more than 120 marches taking place in over 40 countries on the day to raise global awareness of the poaching crisis and to pressure governments into passing and enforcing laws that protect wildlife and ending the illegal wildlife trade. Teams of marchers from our African Parks administrative offices in New York and Amsterdam will join the march in their respective cities as well.

At the same time, the seven parks that African Parks manages in six African countries in conjunction with its Government partners will also be walking the walk, physically or virtually, in their parks in support of the initiative on the day. Follow all of them on the African Parks and park-specific Facebook pages as we put our boots on the ground in support of African wildlife.
Through public-private partnerships African Parks manages Liuwa Plain National Park and Bangweulu Wetlands in Zambia, Majete Wildlife Reserve in Malawi, Akagera National Park in Rwanda, Odzala-Kokoua National Park in the Congo, Garamba National Park in the DRC and Zakouma National Park in Chad – a combined area of 4.1 million hectares.

Jo-Mex

One of my favorite scenes from one of my favorite cult movies is one from My Cousin Vinny. Vinny Gambini (Joe Pesci) and Mona Lisa Vito (Marisa Tomei) get out of their car after driving south all night from Brooklyn to some backwoods town in Alabama where they are about to live for the next few months while Vinny defends his nephew and friend in court against a false murder charge which took place at the local Sac-O-Suds convenience store. Tomei takes one look at the "downtown" and declares, "I bet the Chinese food here is terrible."

Well, Mona Lisa, I can relate. When we first arrived in Joburg and I took a look around, I uttered the same phrase about the Mexican food in Joburg. After all, it's a long way from Mexico to the bottom of Africa. To be completely honest, much to my pleasant surprise, it's not terrible. The few places we have tried so far in Joburg have been actually very good. Limited but good. Here are some of our favorite places to go for Jo-Mex:

Perron: Mexican Appreciation Society, Illovo
house-made tortillas & the Mexican layered dip

good margaritas!
Mama Mexicana, Maboneng
open kitchen cooking
white chilli quesadilla

Cafe Mexicho, Melville

The decor looked the most like a Mexican restaurant one might find in the US. (For their parts, Perron seemed to be trying too hard and Mama Mexicana didn't try at all.)

They served two kinds of chile poppers, one with only cheese for me and the Lucky Luke with cheese and bacon for Vince. Ole!

And if you decide you want to make your own, then you must check out The Authentic Mexican
The Authentic Mexican is a Gauteng-based distributor of well known Mexican Imports (est, 1998) and distributes a wide range of traditional Mexican goods, traditional spices, sauces and food products imported directly from Mexico.
You can contact Jeremy Stafford at 083 474 6801 or email them at info@theauthenticmexican.co.za

Do you want something to drink with that?

On the menu at Mama Mexicana were two excellent Mexican brews, Naked Mexican Craft Beer brewed here in SA and Minerva I.T.A. imported from Mexico.

I.T.A. Tequila Ale can also be found at the following restaurants and liquor stores in the Joburg area:
