Jo-Mex

One of my favorite scenes from one of my favorite cult movies is one from My Cousin Vinny. Vinny Gambini (Joe Pesci) and Mona Lisa Vito (Marisa Tomei) get out of their car after driving south all night from Brooklyn to some backwoods town in Alabama where they are about to live for the next few months while Vinny defends his nephew and friend in court against a false murder charge which took place at the local Sac-O-Suds convenience store. Tomei takes one look at the "downtown" and declares, "I bet the Chinese food here is terrible."

Well, Mona Lisa, I can relate. When we first arrived in Joburg and I took a look around, I uttered the same phrase about the Mexican food in Joburg. After all, it's a long way from Mexico to the bottom of Africa. To be completely honest, much to my pleasant surprise, it's not terrible. The few places we have tried so far in Joburg have been actually very good. Limited but good. Here are some of our favorite places to go for Jo-Mex:

Perron: Mexican Appreciation Society, Illovo
house-made tortillas & the Mexican layered dip

good margaritas!
Mama Mexicana, Maboneng
open kitchen cooking
white chilli quesadilla

Cafe Mexicho, Melville

The decor looked the most like a Mexican restaurant one might find in the US. (For their parts, Perron seemed to be trying too hard and Mama Mexicana didn't try at all.)

They served two kinds of chile poppers, one with only cheese for me and the Lucky Luke with cheese and bacon for Vince. Ole!

And if you decide you want to make your own, then you must check out The Authentic Mexican
The Authentic Mexican is a Gauteng-based distributor of well known Mexican Imports (est, 1998) and distributes a wide range of traditional Mexican goods, traditional spices, sauces and food products imported directly from Mexico.
You can contact Jeremy Stafford at 083 474 6801 or email them at info@theauthenticmexican.co.za

Do you want something to drink with that?

On the menu at Mama Mexicana were two excellent Mexican brews, Naked Mexican Craft Beer brewed here in SA and Minerva I.T.A. imported from Mexico.
