Good News and Bad News

I have some good news and some bad news. The bad news is Vince has an apartment in Cape Town. The good news is ... Vince has an apartment in Cape Town.

It is bad news because that means he will officially be spending even more time in Cape Town and away from Valley Lodge. On the regular. Flash back to all those years he had apartments in Sydney, Zurich, Oslo, Utrecht, San Francisco, etc., etc. while the family stayed behind in NY and NJ.

But it is good news too because I like Cape Town. It is a quick and cheap flight from Joburg. And the apartment allows me to "try Cape Town on for size" without actually having to move there.

And that is exactly what I did this week after Vince and I drove to Cape Town over the long Youth Day weekend, stopping over along the way in the Karoo towns of Graaff-Reinet and Beaufort West.

The apartment is in the quaint and trendy neighborhood of De Waterkant located between the V&A waterfront and Signal Hill.

In fact, from the front balcony, you can see the sun rise over the V&A ...

... and from the back patio, you can see it set behind Signal Hill (from where the Naval Noon Gun's been fired daily over the city since 1902.)

The location really is ideal. There is a set of stairs across the street which easily lead down to the waterfront. And the apartment is also just a short walk to the City Bowl. (I think that is what I miss the most about New York, walking. I don't walk much in Joburg but Cape Town is a walking city too. I like that.)

Or you can just stay put. De Waterkant is like a little village unto itself. It has a bunch of shops and restaurants and rooftop bars. Vince had already found our new local internet cafe / coffee shop, Origins, which also sells their own roasted beans. Good job, Vince. I found our new local bistro, La Petite Tarte.

It has all the essentials. We can walk to our local Super Spar market ...

... and our local Catholic Church, Sacred Heart,  with a real pipe organ!

Best part - a roof with a view! Great place for sundowners.

And don't tell Lou and Serge, but the apartment comes with its own cat. So now we have a cat in Cape Town too.
