Wild Dog Love

The African wild dog (Lycaon pictus), also called an African painted dog and hunting dog, is a canid native to sub-Saharan Africa. It is the largest of its family and the only member of the genus Lycaon on the continent.  It is classified as endangered by the IUCN as it has disappeared from much of its original range. Like the chimpanzee and many of the other endangered animals in Africa, its decline in population is ongoing, due to habitat fragmentation, human persecution, and disease outbreaks.

The Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre is trying to reverse that trend by providing sanctuary and a safe breeding ground for the African Wild Dog.

Here are some photos of the African Wild Dogs living at the HESC.
