Kariega Field Notes: Leopard Monitoring

The elusive leopard is one tough cat to track. Over the two weeks I was at Kariega, the leopards took out a couple of impalas, a blesbuck and a zebra, all sight unseen.

We put four night cameras in the areas where they made the kills in an attempt to at least get an image of one on film. The cameras react to movement and take a photograph 30 seconds after being motion-triggered.

The first camera came up blank with just a zebra and an impala. The second camera at least had some interesting pictures of the equally elusive honey badger and bushpig.

We are anxiously awaiting the results from the third and fourth camera which will be picked up this week. Third or fourth time's a charm?

gotcha!
