Save our Zoo Lake Bowling Club

I am anxiously following the drama surrounding the Zoo Lake Bowling Club. Some Durban politico has served the club with a warrant to vacate the premises in order to take it over and turn it into an "all-sports club" whatever that is is. I love the old world atmosphere and do not want to see this institution changed at all!

The Zoo Lake Bowling Club, founded in 1932, is one of the oldest sports clubs of its kind in the country. In 1976 it played host to the World Bowls Championships, which South Africa won.

The club was developed after mining magnate Herman Eksteen gifted swathes of his farm to the people of Johannesburg as a “public open space,” under the condition that it never be privatised, subdivided, sub-let or sold. Eksteen also insisted that it be run under a strict non-sexist, non-racial policy. “It encourages persons from all walks of life to join the club and become bowls players.”

And it is a super place to hang on a Sunday afternoon. With a terrace and beer garden you can while away the hours and watch the fierce lawn bowling action!

  1. Hi, when I click on the link from FB I can see the blog but I don't see any info on how to follow you. Maybe that's the issue. Glad so many are reading your stories. Miss you!
