Animal Sanctuaries

a white lion cub
You do not need to go on a week-long safari around here to have a close encounter with a white lion or cheetah.

There are all manner of animal sanctuaries and private reserves surrounding Johannesburg which will do just fine for a day trip. The Lion and Rhino Sanctuary, an Elephant Sanctuary, a Crocodile Farm, a Cheetah Research Center and a Monkey Park to name a few.

Animals who are injured or orphaned in the wild are relocated to these sanctuaries before they are ideally reintroduced back into the wild. Some are also a haven for breeding endangered or threatened species like the rhino or cheetah. Over time we intend to visit them all.
maybe I should not have worn my cheetah spot scarf!

On Sunday we checked out the Lion and Rhino Sanctuary and bee-lined it straight over to the best part, a rare opportunity to play with baby lions and cheetahs. So cute!

Kids, don't try this while on safari!

  2. Yes we saw them! A male and a female. Our ranger said there is a second female but we didn't her. Amazing! I will poet pictures as soon as I cull them. You know how that goes.
