We checked out one last stop on the Shaka Tour which was close to where we were staying in Umhlanga Rocks. Shaka's Rock.
In 1824, the first British Settlers started to arrive in sailing ships from the Cape. Legend has it that Shaka was sitting on these very rocks when he spied the ships off in the distance in the Indian Ocean. Their arrival set into motion the next 100 or so years of violent history.
Nowadays the rocks are pretty much used as a perch for fishing in the ocean.
Or in the many tide pools.
There are all of these tide pools amongst the rocks for snorkeling too.
Some are helped along by man who built concrete edges to retain the water after the tide recedes.
Some are natural.
Whatever, they are cool.
And they are stocked with pretty fish who get stuck in them when the tide rolls out.
Sea anemone too.
We walked along Shaka's Rock beach looking for beach treasure.
Even if these are not the exact rocks Shaka sat upon on that fateful day, the rocks are still pretty cool.
Ocean erosion sculptures.
Cool outcroppings.
And alluvial fans.
This one looks like a dolphin to me.
And this one looks like a hammerhead shark in the middle!
