Dia de Los Muertos

Dia de Muertos, San Francisco

We missed Halloween, All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day in Africa because we were traveling abroad this year.

But we decided to celebrate the Day of the Dead anyway tonight. Hate to sound cold, but what difference does a couple of days make when you're dead?

We made my sister's fierce recipe for Mexican Tortilla Soup. Sort of. We had to improvise a little on the ingredients. Samp instead of hominy. A local salty soft cheese instead of queso manchego. And we made it in a potjie pot.

Yummy.

We also did not have the makings for a proper altar at home so we had to improvise there too. We'd just visited several of the Camino Real missions when we drove up the coast of California from San Diego to Big Sur to San Francisco. We went to Mass in the Serra Chapel of the Mission San Juan Capistrano where I took this picture of their shrine to Our Lady of Guadalupe.

The photo worked just fine as our makeshift altar.

Feliz Dia de los Muertos!
