First the Rosebank Rooftop Market closed abruptly in April leaving behind a gaping hole and the African Craft Market to languish on the two floors below. Rumours swirled for months. Lawsuits were filed. Facebook campaigns were waged. Finally the rumours were confirmed. The Rooftop Market was reopening somewhere other than Rosebank. Signs went up around town. And the Rooftop Market with most of the former Rosebank crafters opened at Norwood Mall in September.
Then the plot thickened. We heard several weeks ago by one of the crafters at the new Norwood Market that the African Craft Market was following suit and would now be moving from Rosebank Mall as well. To Mandela Square! We of course were thrilled because that is where we live. And sure enough the signs are popping up around town announcing the market's opening on November 15. The new market will be called the Sandton
Craft Market.
But the saga was not quite over. No no. Last weekend at Bryanston Organic Market we heard that Rosebank is replacing their old Rooftop Market with another version, the Finders Keepers Market and sure enough, it is launching this weekend.
So it looks to me like the Rosebank Mall never really had an issue with markets per se. More likely it was with the market managers, B & B Markets. Sounds like an idea for a new reality TV show. Market Wars.
