Night Markets

Johannesburg loves its night markets and luckily so do I. There are many of them, more than I can go to in a lifetime probably but these are my favorites. So far.

Some of the markets occur all year long like the Fordsburg Night Market which is an Indian/ Pakistani/ Bengali Souk and Asia Market on Saturday nights. During the night market the area around the main thoroughfare Mint Street fills with stalls selling clothes, jewellery, DVDs, Bollywood films, spices, sparkly shoes and lots and lots of street food. The predominantly Muslim community turn out in their finest clothes to wander the streets, shop, eat, get beauty treatments, gossip and meet with friends. And did I mention street food?

Arts on Main hosts a night market the first Thursday of every month. Like their weekly Sunday Market on Main, they offer fine-food, design products, local farmers, seasonal items, gourmet goods, plants and herbs, fresh produce, cut flowers, organic prepared foods and independent beers. The next night market is scheduled for December 13.

And before the holiday season is up I will make it to the Bryanston's Moonlight Market. It runs every Tuesday night until December 17 over the holiday season. There is always live music on market nights but in December there are Christmas carols. With singing. Going.

Last night I visited the Night Market at Katy's Palace in Sandton, sponsored by House and Leisure, Old Mutual and Glen Carlou vineyards.

The resident African crafts shop Amatuli was open and the special market featured finely prepared food, and upscale housewares, jewelry, and cutting edge fashion.

Belle's Patisserie was there.

So was Erre who I saw walk the runway during South African Fashion Week. (They were my favorite actually out of all the finalists and I think she should have won the Renault Challenge.)

I also really liked the clothes by Jane Sews.

I am not sure how often this market is done, but I will keep my eye out for the next one.
