Side by Side

Josie Field and Laurie Levine are two singer/songwriter/musician solo performers who have come together to play side by side. They are touring around Gauteng (and maybe beyond, I don't know) throughout November and December. If you get a chance, you should really see them. They are wonderful.

Afrikaans for "mix grass"
We saw Josie and Laurie at the unfortunately named Klitsgras. (It means "mix grass" in Afrikaans but they should really reconsider.)

Klitsgras is a farm outside of Pretoria and it is Gauteng's answer to Yasger's Farm. Think Woodstock ... Bar Harbor ... Key West. As Martin Mull used to say ... "Remember the big folk music scare of the 60's? That crap almost caught on!" Well it certainly caught on at Klitsgras and it's not going anywhere.

Laurie and Josie play banjo, ukelele, the kazoo, the melodica, guitars, the xylophone and all manner of hand percussion instruments. Blues, folk, country, bluegrass, soulful rock. Very versatile.

First Sundays of the month are for chillin' at Klitsgras.

Lou chillin'

That's Lou's specialty so we brought along Lou & Serge. (It was way too chill for Serge.)

Sunday was also Dia de Los Muertos and the place was decorated with "skulls" made out of plastic milk bottles.

Clever!

Klitsgras also has a monthly Drumming Circle evening. We have been wanting to do a Drumming Circle since we moved to SA. This looks like the right place to do it, man!
