Mrembo Spa

After a hot, dusty and bumpy two weeks on safari in Tanzania, Vince and I took refuge on the island of Zanzibar for some much-needed rest and relaxation and to celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary. First stop, the Mrembo Traditional Spa in Stone Town.

I had their flagship Singo treatment, a natural exfoliating body scrub traditionally used when preparing Zanzibari girls for marriage. (It wasn't bad some 35 years after marriage either!) Prepared by hand with a pestle and mortar, the fresh jasmine, ylang ylang, rose petals, mpompia (geranium), mrehani (sweet basil), and liwa (sandalwood) combine to make the most wonderfully aromatic blend. Vince had a more bridegroom appropriate clove-based scrub called the Vidonge.

Both treatments began and ended with some delicious spice tea and both included a massage. Not an "African massage", the phrase used to describe the bouncing around one does on a bumpy game drive, but a real deep tissue massage with aromatic oils.  Delicious!
