Pongwe is Paradise

Choosing a beach to visit in Zanzibar is a hard decision ... so we didn't make it. We let our travel agent Tracy choose one for us. She chose the pristine white sands of Pongwe Beach on the island's east coast and a stay at the Pongwe Beach Hotel.

Pongwe is only about a hour's drive away (on a very good road by the way) from Stone Town but it felt downright remote. The perfect place to unwind, dive, snorkel, swim, eat seafood, lounge and stroll on the beach.

keep those cocktails coming!
I do not believe I have ever seen Vince so relaxed!

The Pongwe Beach Hotel is blessed with the only beach in the area that does not disappear with the high tide. The other neighboring hotels are not as lucky.

And the sand is gorgeous! It was actually a very light pink owing to the coral reefs right offshore. And powdery soft. The water is incredibly warm too! Even out on the coral reef where you can take the hotel boat out with Captain Ali to go snorkeling.

Seaweed is harvested in the neighboring village of Pongwe for export to Asia.

Pongwe is also a fishing village supplying the hotel with the freshest fish, lobster, crab and prawns. We could even go for a sunset cruise from Pongwe on one of the dhows.
